Our logo is a homage to Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man; which translates to "The proportions of the human body according to Vitruvius". Vitruvius was an author, architect and military engineer in the 1st century BC and discovered an interesting theory of the symmetry of the body. Vitruvius described the human figure as being the principal source of proportion among the classical orders of architecture. His drawing is based on the correlations of ideal human proportions with geometry. The idea of this symbol is important to our system as it pertains to the combination of physical and mental efforts, technical proficiency, dietary conditioning, stress control, recovery and injury tactics, postural control and sleep cycles.
I use the square and circle to represent the angles and rotations the body must go through during the training cycle in order to achieve maximum benefit. The angles used most in training movements are 90° and 360° - the square & circle.
The ancient symbology behind the circle runs deep. On one side it symbolises the circle of life from birth to death, in our training mantra it symbolises the journey of the movement from start to finish.
The square represents the box we find ourselves in and the overlapping of the circle reminds us that we can venture “outside the box” but only within the parameters of the moment – this is why the circle does no encircle the entire box, only a portion.
In the training context, we are reminding the individual that we can get out of routine, but only incrementally. To imply that you can step completely out of the box at any one moment is a huge overestimation of human potential and should not be expected, rather, liberated from ones consciousness. This frees us from being overly critical at our performance, allowing for a more strategical approach to our training.
