Cynthia “Cyn” Stevenson
Founder
My fitness career started in 2005 and has seen me travel all over Australia and to different parts of the world training new instructors and presenting all different types of group fitness classes.
Since working full time in the fitness industry I have been fortunate enough to experience and be apart of every area the industry has to offer including gym instructor, receptionist, sales, management, international master trainer, personal training and my favorite of all, group fitness.
Originally from Melbourne and being a big believer in taking risks, in February 2009 I packed up everything in my car and moved to Sydney to further my fitness career, knowledge and passion. Being right in the “hussle and bussle” of such a hectic city, my once very slow paced Fitness career suddenly started to move at a rapid rate, constantly traveling, networking and working on my skills by researching, reading and developing ideas on how to be the best version of me.
Having dealt with “personal demons” and proudly coming out on top, I give all credit to certain mentors and my savior; exercise. Such mentors including Anthony Robbins, Joe Rogan, Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson, Paul Check, Gordon Ramsey, Jon Taffer and my husband, Justin Stevenson. My personal experiences made me realize that before starting any physical activity and in order to get any form of results or benefits, you must get to the “why” first. This opened my eyes to the psychology of training. In my years of training people, I came to the conclusion that most people need physical activity in their lives for one reason or another. Whether it be for weight loss, motivation, stress relief, or dealing with life in general. I use this approach for every client I train. WHY did they come to me in the first place? Most of the time, they themselves don’t even know the WHY. Until it slaps them across the face once I bring it to the surface!
My training experience includes dancing and performing on stage from the ripe age of 3, tennis, soccer, martial arts - kickboxing & Tae Kwon Do, and pro wrestling training. I believe exercise/training needs to be varied in order to get the full benefit which is where my Rico Group Fitness business comes in. I deliver 6 different styles of group fitness classes: Mini trampoline, Kickboxing, Shadowboxing, Weights & Energy/Cardio, Calisthenics & Dance and perform these around 16+ times per week to 100’s of unique individuals. The classes cover everything a person living a normal life will ever need and the variety helps when the routine of training kicks becomes tough.
As intense as my training routine can be, I also promote and offer recovery methods such as massage, sauna, floating and the amazing benefits of oxygen therapy through my Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen chamber business.
I was born in 1986 and my hobbies include training, music editing, dancing, sparring, traveling to Melbourne to visit my family, cooking, reading, being outdoors and choreographing.
I have been in the fitness scene for over 15 years now, and my goals/dreams are the same now as they were when I was growing up; A - I want to help people and B - I want to be famous.
I have already achieved “A”. I am still yet to achieve “B”.
My current path is presenting exercise to music which I choreograph, edit and design with my husband, Justin. We teach in different areas of Sydney including, inner west, north & west.
We are both personal trainers of over 10 and 15 years and each do between 15-20 sessions a week. However nothing gives me a better feeling than jumping on stage, microphone on, loud music, and seeing participants work, sweat, but most importantly get great benefits from Rico classes. Don’t believe me? Read a few words from my participants below…
I get asked on a weekly basis a few questions, like “how do you stay motivated? How do you teach 15+ classes a week and still be standing by the end of the week?! How do I get arms like yours?!”
But the common question my “Rico Freaks” ask me all the time is “WHY AREN’T YOU ON TV YET?!” To be honest, I ask myself the same question every day!
Rico Group Fitness classes are like none other in Australia; possibly the world! And I have been around long enough to know that I am not exaggerating when I say this.
Everybody who does a class with us comments on how “different” we are from other instructors.
And without calling anyone out, I will guarantee you that I will ALWAYS workout with you and not just stand there with my arms crossed in front of my chest yelling out instructions. My classes ARE my workout.
Heading into our 6th year, Rico Group Fitness keeps solidly growing, with every class getting bigger as more people get to know who we are, our library of DVD home workouts keep increasing with almost 40 completed, and 2017 so far has had a focus on brand awareness with Rico merchandise (workout tops and winter hoodies)
All this but I am still not satisfied! I believe we are so good that the world needs to know us! Growing up, I use to exercise with my mum with “Aerobics Oz Style” A show which was a choreographed aerobics class. After a few years, this show was taken off air and nothing has ever taken its place. This is where I want Rico to come in. We have attracted such a wide range of people from our classes however our next target is the home market. I strongly believe there needs to be an option for people to work out with us at home. Yes, there are a lot of TV “fitness shows” currently out there, but none where the person watching can actually train. Why not?!
I know my turn will eventually come. We are too good to not be known nation and worldwide. But I will admit, I’m not the most patient person! I see so many “YouTube and Facebook sensations” of people becoming famous for what they do. I’m still waiting for this to happen to us!
